In the heart of East Africa, along with neighboring Kenya and Tanzania is one of the best places to admire the great African wildlife, one of our collective imagination. His story and the shortage of accommodation, however, have made Tanzania less popular in Kenya, but as to the nature and the environment is not at all the second. Greater than three times in Italy, it has different characteristics at the continental level, but also worldwide.
The interior looks like a vast plateau at an altitude of 1-1500 meters covered with sparse forest, savannah more or less surrounded by trees and semi-arid steppe, surrounded by huge lakes and high mountains. Here are the sources of two of the world’s largest rivers, the Nile and Congo, and with other minor courses pour their waters into the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Among the lakes that surround it should be mentioned the Victoria increased by extension in Africa and third in the world, and Tanganyika, with its – 1,435 m is one of the deepest ever. Among the mountain Kilimanjaro, 5,895 m with a maximum peak of the continent still white with snow, even if it is just below the Equator, the Meru (4566 m) and the Ngorongoro crater, with its 20 km in diameter between the largest the world.
The Tanzania now has 14 national parks, marine parks and numerous 3 forest reserves and natural, or 28 % of the territory, for a total of 100 000 square kilometers, almost one third of Italy. The Ngorongoro Crater offers by far the highest concentration of wildlife on earth, with all species represented in East Africa: lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, wildebeests, gazelles, zebras, antelopes and, in the salt lake located on the bottom , huge flocks of pink flamingos. No case has been compared to Noah’s Ark and the Garden of Eden. The Lake Manyara Park is a small but varied, where they mix rivers, lakes, tropical forest and savanna shrub: home to lions, leopards, hippos, baboons, monkeys, vervet monkeys, wildebeest, giraffe, buffalo, impala, zebra and water birds such as Pink flamingos and cranes, as well as the largest population of elephants.
The Park Tarangire is little known, but it is also one of the most beautiful: the dry season you can see large concentrations of animals, including herds of elephants which comprise more than 400 specimens. They meet lions, leopards, cheetahs, and buffalo, but also rare animals such as kudu, oryx, gerenuk taurotraghi and, in addition to 300 species of birds and water birds and pythons over six meters long. The most famous of all is the Park of Serengeti, bordering the popular park kenyoto of Masai Mara. Here you can get an idea of how it could be East Africa before the arrival of the extermination of wildlife and operated by the white hunters in the late nineteenth century. The endless savannahs there are millions of hoofed animals in constant movement in search of pasture and water, monitored and followed by visual predators, to form one of the most impressive that you can see in nature, it is indeed the greatest concentration of herbivores in the world: more than a million wildebeest, zebras 200 thousand, 250 thousand gazelles, 74 000 buffaloes, closely marked by lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs.
During the rainy season they live in the Masai Mara, but when lakes and rivers are drying herbivores leave en masse westward, destination Serengeti in search of new pastures, to return to the east before the new rainy season. This is the most periodic migration of wildlife on the planet. The Natron is a saline lake in the Rift Valley and the extension variable from red waters, the only breeding site for rare and endemic species of flamingos. For their environmental characteristics Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Kilimanjaro and Selous were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
