Mumbai, and the largest city in the Western Ghats. Once it was considered as center of power of the Maratha empire, it is located 560 meters above the sea level on the Deccan plateau at the confluence of Mula and Mutha rivers. Pune city is an administrative capital of Pune district.

 

Pune has existed as a town since 937 A.D and it was originally called as Punawadi. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was the founder of the Maratha Empire, lived in Pune as a young boy, and later the city became a political center as the seat of the Peshwa. Pune become an apex center as the seat of the Peshwa, the prime minister of the Chhatraoati of Satara. After the town was annexed in 1817, the place served as a cantonment area and the monsoon capital of the Bombay presidency till the independancy of India.

Today, Pune is also called as a educational hub and it is the cultural capital of Maharasthra. Pune has a wide array of commercial establishment like manufacturing, glass, sugar, since the year 1950-1960. It is growing hinterland that has many information technology and automotive factories. The city is known for a variety of cultural activities, classical music, spiritual places, theater, literature and sports. These activities and opportunities attract innumerable migrants from all over India and abroad that makes it a potpourri of culture and tradition.

How to Reach Pune

By Flight

Almost most of the airlines have flights to Pune like Jet Airways, Kingfisher, IndiGo, SpiceJet. One can even reach Mumbai or from Bangalore by Air.

By Train

Pune is connected by other Indian cities. It is not an average Indian station, with additional facilities like information booth, internet cafe and computerized ticket booking. Tickets are not available, but one can hire porters that carry luggage. Trains come and go in from different routes like Bombay, Delhi, Goa and Cheenai.

Pune has both Government and private buses. Tourists travel between Mumbai and Pune and they can use either private buses and the state government. Tourists can even avail Taxi service from Mumbai. Pune is served by three national highway and an expressway.

Here you can visit a variety of places like Panshet Dam- a dam known for water sports, Bhatgar Dam-the highest river dam built on river Velvandi, Pimpri Chinchwad-it is an old town and one can find its references in Shivaji and Peshwa period, Raigad-the place was capital under the aegis of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Britishers named this place Gibralter of the East.
