Assam- The Magical Destination

Assam is a northeastern state of India. Its capital is Dispur which is located at Guwahati. Assam has the rivers the Brahmaputra and the Barak River. Assam is surrounded by six of the other very popular “Seven Sister States” which are Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya.

Assam is also known as land of Red River and blue hills. Assam has exquisite natural beauty and rich culture. In ancient times Assam was also known as Pragjyotisha or Pragiyotishpura and Kamarupa.

There are several wildlife preserves like Kaziranga National Park, Manas National Park, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Nameri National Park, and Dibru-Saikhowa National Park for tourists to pay a visit. Assam has rich cultural heritage.

  • Guwahati: Guwahati is the gateway to the enthralling North Eastern India and is located on the shores of turbulent Brahmaputra. Pragiyotishpura was one of the names of Guwahati which was considered as a vast kingdom during the epic period of the Mahabharata. Guwahati today is one of the largest cities of Assam.
  • Kaziranga National Park: The Kaziranga National Park is the home to wide-variety of wildlife. Rhino, Swap deer can be spotted on the ‘Elephant Safari’ in the early morning. With the help of ‘Jeep Safari’ many local and migratory birds can be seen. The scenic beauty of Karbi Anglong Hills is worth observing once in life-time. There are many perennial water bodies inside the Park and also wide-variety of flora and fauna. There are some 32 species of flora identified so far. The Park is also the home to nearly 21 near threatened species of birds like baza, Bengal Florican, Hornbills and Osprey.
  • Kamakhya Temple: The Temple is situated on the top of Nilachal Hills and is some 8 kilometers from the railway station of Guwahati. The Temple is visited by a large number of devotees from all over India. Local buses and auto rikshaws are the common mode of transportation to reach there.
  • Hajo: This is the place where the three religions meet-Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. It is a place which has large number of temples. Hayagriva-Madhab Temple is the most famous among them. It is believed that the Temple has a relic of Lord Buddha while some are of opinion that Lord Buddha accomplished nirvana here. Many Bhutanese visit this temple during the winter. Then there is another place of pilgrimage for Muslims called as Poa-Mecca. According to mythology, the Pandavas took a shelter over here during their period of hiding hence the place is of prime importance for all the three religions.

The best suitable time to visit Assam is from November to May.
